Fewer students from state making the cut for NTSE

PUBLISH DATE 4th September 2018

Fewer students from Maharashtra have been bagging the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) scholarship in the last four years.

Not even a 100 students have been able to secure the scholarship in the last two years. The examination is a flagship programme of the National Council of Educational Research and Training for standard X students.

The test assesses the mental and scholastic ability of the students. Those who qualify get a monthly stipend. Experts said the talent search exam is not taken seriously by the students from the state.

Students first appear for the Maharashtra Talent Search Exam from which students are selected on merit for the national exam. Around 65,000 students appear for the state-level exam each year and close to 400 qualify.

According to a talent search exam expert Shekhar Ghate, every state is given a limited quota. Accordingly, about 400 students appear for the national exam from Maharashtra every year.

“In 2006-07, the NCERT decided to conduct the exam for standard VIII and later the rules were changed and brought back to standard X. This may have affected the results,” he added. In 2005-06, 292 students were selected from Maharashtra, the highest. The NCERT had allotted 387 quota seats for Maharashtra. The results for the 2017-18 exam will be out in September. A senior official at the Maharashtra State Council of Examinations said, “The state exam has the SSC syllabus while the national exam has the CBSE syllabus. There is a wide gap in both exams.”
