FYJC: Linguistic minority schools hit by freezing of seats

PUBLISH DATE 30th July 2018

In the midst of the first year junior college (FYJC) admissions, the Bombay high court’s decision to stop the surrendering of vacant minority quota seats till the completion of centralised admission process (CAP), has put the city junior colleges in a fix. With the next court hearing due after 10 days, the colleges fear that the seats might go untouched.

Dipak Gujar, vice prinicipal of Saraswati Vidyalaya (SV) Union said, “Considering that our college is a linguistic minority college, most often the seats are taken up by general students. We have been getting inquiries for that but, now with the new rule in place, we can neither fill them all by ourselves nor surrender them to the government, causing chaos both for the students and the schools.”

Anil P Kulkarni, vice principal of commerce faculty at Haribhai V. Desai College of Commerce, Arts and Science, added that the problem is more prominent in linguistic minority colleges. Agreeing, Shaikh Aftab Anwar, principal of Poona college of Arts, Science and Commerce, said, “Although, on a large scale this is creating havoc for junior colleges, as many seats might just go empty this year, due to the delay. We aren’t facing any problem being both a religious and linguistic minority college. As per the previous rule, the practice of giving away vacant seats to the state government to be opened to general students, was opening a door for many good students to study in the said colleges. Now, that has been snapped and the student fraternity will stand to lose.”

On July 12, the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court had, asked the government to allow minority colleges to fill their minority, in-house and management quota seats , only till the end of the centralised admission process(CAP) rounds. Following this, those vacant seats under various quotas which were earlier surrendered and converted into general seats for the next round, were given back to the junior colleges. Although a relief had been later given by the court to 25 percent in-house seats, by allowing colleges to surrender them, the minority quota seats however are still not off the hook. The third merit list would be declared at 11 am on July 31.
