PUBLISH DATE 2nd June 2017

Certificate courses that provide an insight into various subjects within a short period of time are fast gaining popularity among students in the city .Such courses, experts point out, help students make better career choices.

As of now, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) offers over 100 short-term certificate courses, which have been running at full capacity over the past two years. Most of the colleges in the city are also offering the speciality courses.

Starting from courses in foreign languages, today the scope of study has widened to include specialised courses like Modi script, manuscriptology , 3D modelling, as well as computer hardware and networking. These courses are also open to the general public and anyone can try their hand at them.

Sir Parashurambhau College on Tilak Road offers as many as 15 certificate courses.Principal Dilip Sheth pointed out that these are fast gaining popularity .“A few years ago, people largely chose to undertake certificate courses related to foreign languages. Although these continue to be widely popular, in recent days, there has been an inclination towards specialised courses such as bioinformatics, life sciences and statistics,“ Sheth said. In fact, such is the popularity that most courses offered by the college are full.

“These courses are flexible and they are also in favour of financially weak students. We are working towards strengthening and sensitising the courses we offer and adding more such courses to the list,“ said Nitin Karmalkar, vice chancellor of SPPU.
