The Yogi Adityanath government today took a landmark decision against the prevailing practice of reservation in India. In a meeting today, the Yogi Adityanath Government passed an order which bans reservation in private medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. This completely stops reservation for Schedules Castes, Schedules Tribes, and Other Backward Castes in private medical colleges.
The previous government had brought in this legislation. Although quite controversial, Akhilesh Yadav had refused to repeal this. This move by Akhilesh was seen as a move to accumulate votes from lower caste communities. However, his plan had failed and this was quite evident in the Uttar Pradesh election results.
This decision comes right after the Yogi Adityanath government announced that they would be opening about 16 All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) and over 25 more medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. As per sources, the government felt that doctors who are critical to the society should not join or pass a course only because of reservation. Equal opportunities would be available for all those who wish to apply. This was the main reason the order bans reservation in private medical colleges.
However, this has not gone well with all. People of minority communities have objected to this move. A minority community leader who did not wish to be named said, “those who have been deprived these rights for several years should get them now. How do you expect the backward to come up if such facilities are denied?”
Healthcare going a long way in UP
Several people appreciated the move which bans reservation in private medical colleges. Majority people feel that no one should become a doctor merely based on reservation. Every person should be given an equal right to apply, study and become a doctor. Moreover, this move is aimed only at private medical colleges and in no way affects the right of minorities to get reservation in government colleges.
Yogi Adityanath has been working very hard from his first day to ensure the medical system in Uttar Pradesh is improved. He first ordered a ban on doctors in government hospitals from having thier own practice and asked them all to come on time. Then he announced that UP would get over 40 new medical colleges and now this! Sure looks like UP is going in the right path.
