BTech compulsorily internships for 600 to 700 hours

PUBLISH DATE 27th November 2018

Students studying for a Bachelor’s in Technology (BTech) degree will have compulsorily internships for 600 to 700 hours after the third, fourth, sixth and eighth semesters which will carry 14 to 20 credit points, the All-India Council of technical Education (AICTE) announced in its policy published recently.

Currently, these students take up internships at the institutional level in the fourth year and are awarded marks. The new policy clearly defines the work hours and the credit points.

Chairman Anil Sahasrabuddhe said these may be full-time or part-time. “Our curriculum is flexible for the duration. Therefore, opportunities must be provided for experiences that cannot be anticipated when planning the course. Institutes would have the flexibility to schedule internship, project work and seminars according to the availability of the opportunities,” he added.

One credit point is equivalent to 40-45 hours of work and a full-time intern is expected to spend 40-45 hours per week to gather 600 to 700 hours work for BTech and 450 to 500 hours for a diploma.

Sahasrabuddhe said during the summer vacation, after the fourth or sixth semester, students are ready for industry experience.

“They may choose to work on innovation or entrepreneurial activities resulting in a start-up or undergo internship with industry, government organisations, micro or small enterprises to make themselves job-ready,” Sahasrabuddhe added.

In the last semester, students may take up project work and seminars as specified in the curriculum of the institute. Every student should also submit a report with overall compilation of internship activities.

Rohan Kulkarni, a BTech student, said, “We are already taking up internships at various companies and firms. There was no set policy about it. Many students choose to stay at home during vacations. This policy has made it mandatory for all students. The council will give the credits which will add value to our profiles.”
