4,000 more PG seats for doctors

In a move to meet the demand for specialists and boost availability of doctors in rural areas, the government approved over 4,000 postgraduate (PG) seats for the academic session of 2017-18. Now, the total number of available PG medical seats has increased to 35,117. Terming the increase an “all time record number“, health minister J P Nadda said this would help in the government's plans to strengthen tertiary care and improve medical education. Of the total increase, 2,046 seats will be added in medical colleges. While the government has added 4,193 PG seats so far, it is expected to add another 1,000 seats in March 2017.Nadda said government had also decided to amend the teacher student ratio in clinical subjects in government medical colleges with an aim to increase PG seats in these subjects. “This change alone has resulted in the creation of 1,137 extra seats in 71colleges.“
