Despite the mad rush for engineering and medical, Ayurveda can be  a good career option for the students after class 12. Ayurveda deals with the study of healthcare covering a broad area of good living & wellness. It is not only a medical science but a ‘Way of Living’!

Ayurveda which literally means ‘Knowledge of Life’ is India’s traditional holistic system of medicine. It’s practice dates back from more than 5,000 years. It is world’s oldest known medical science and is believed to be the source of all system of modern medicine.

Branches of Ayurveda

Ayurveda has 8 branches in it.

  1. Kaya-Chikitsa (General Medicine): Cure of diseases affecting the body.

  2. Kaumara-Bhritya and Bala Roga: Deals with the treatment of children.

  3. Shalya-Tantra: Deals with surgical techniques.

  4. Shalakya-Tantra (ophthalmology): Deals with the diseases of the teeth, eye, nose, ear etc.

  5. Bhuta-Vidya or Griha-Chikitsa (Demonology or Psychiatry): Deals with the diseases caused by affliction of external factors such as evil sprits and ghosts. In other words it may be known as the branch that deals with the treatment of psychosomatic diseases.

  6. Agada-Tantra: Deals with antidotes to poison.

  7. Rasayana-Tantra (Geriatrics/Anti Agings): Deals with rejuvenation.

  8. Vajikarana-Tantra (Aphrodisiacs): Deals with healthy and desired progeny.

Ayurveda lays emphasis on the prevention rather than the cure of disease and hinges on earth’s rich natural heritage. According to the basic principles of Ayurveda, this universe is a combination of five energy elements viz Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether.

The balance between these elements keeps one healthy. An imbalance and disorder in these naturally brings forth several diseases.

Why Ayurveda as a career option after class 12?

Ayurveda may be an old tradition, but it is evolving with the times and catching up gradually with modern science. Scientific research has helped tremendously in the understanding and modernization of the ancient system. Today’s Ayurvedic medicines are not just crude preparations of plants or mere concoctions made up of roots, stems, and leaves of various herbs, in fact they are getting more advanced with more refined methods preparation, assisted by modern technology.

Regardless of its antiquated reputation, Ayurveda is a highly regarded system of medicine, and career options in Ayurveda Medicine are more than just respectable. It being more affordable than Western medicine is a health care system that is within the reach of the average layperson.

Eligibility and Degrees in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery

At present, there are almost 250 recognized Ayurvedic Colleges in India offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Ayurveda. Bachelor program in Ayurveda such as Ayurvedacharya or Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S.) is a five and half year of course with one year internship.

As the minimum eligibility condition for this course the candidate should complete Higher Secondary or P.U.C. preferably with Sanskrit or an examination equivalent to it. Science students having Physics, Chemistry, Biology and/or Sanskrit as their choice of subjects are qualified for this m course too. There are few institutions offering certificate or diploma courses or Ayurvedic courses to the students. The duration of such courses is 1to 2 years. To get their admission in this program the candidates must have an S.S.C.L. or Matriculation degree as their qualification.

B.A.M.S. program admissions are generally on the basis of an entrance exam. There are also few institutes which accommodates students in order of their merit.
Bachelors Degree in Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery is
an integration of Traditional Ayurveda with current medicines.

These institutions provide high standards of training and research in all aspects of Ayurveda, with a scientific approach. They offer a variety of graduate and postgraduate courses and provide research facilities for Ph.D. research work in Ayurvedic medicine and allied areas.

Career opportunities in Ayurveda: Job Prospects

Nearly, 80% of the population uses Ayurveda exclusively or combined with modern medicine. In America, Ayurveda medicine and therapies are used as a Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM). Ayurvedic medicine is even extensively practiced in Nepal, Australia, Malaysia, Russia, Canada, United Kingdom, Belgium and other countries.

Career opportunities in Ayurveda stand quite bright job prospects. An Ayurvedic doctor can get employed as medical officer/doctor at government and private Ayurveda hospitals. One can set up his own practice of Ayurveda at his private clinic. They can work as tutors in Ayurveda colleges in the academic field. They are on high demand as consultants in Pancha Karma Centers. Furthermore, Ayurveda is a virgin field of research; one who wants to research has unlimited opportunities in Ayurvedic career. Today Ayurveda is gaining much more importance with Pancha Karma Therapy being recognized worldwide. The increasing trend of SPAs all over the world has expanded the scope of Ayurveda doctors. Patients from all over the world travel to India, to receive Ayurvedic treatment and Pancha Karma Therapy. More and more Pancha Karma centers are coming up for serving the tourists, especially foreigners. With the popularity of traditional alternative system of medicine, the demand for Ayurveda doctors are on the rise. For those who would like to continue their education after B.A.M.S. can pursue further studies with post graduation degree. MD – Doctor of Medicine (Ayurveda) and MS – Master of Surgery (Ayurveda) are the post graduate degrees conferred. There are various institutions which offer post graduation degree in ayurveda, which is of 3 years duration.

A B.A.M.S. doctor can work in following domains after completion of the degree.

  • General Practice

  • Research (Clinical research or epidemiological research)

  • Hospital and Healthcare

  • Spa Therapist

  • Administration

  • Health Supervisor (As per High courts decision a B.A.M.S. doctor can work for the post of Health Supervisor).

Students can also go for medical transcription, medical tourism, medical event management, medical journalism, medical photography and documentation. B.A.M.S. graduates can complete LLB and work as legal medical advisor and there lies a great potential in manufacturing of equipments required for Ayurvedic treatments like Panchakarma. An MBA degree as the extra eligibility in the management field along with B.A.M.S. qualification provides excellent recruitments offered by foreign countries.
